Some Say "Real LIfe" Is Hard Enough

Entering a book group in Second Life.

Second Life is not to be taken lightly. For better and worse, it represents the near future of human experience. While still relatively unknown in the mainstream, the online world of secondlife.com is a burgeoning community of 1.5 million people globally spending $500,000 or more every 24-hour period. Second Life is not only a social scientists' dream as a tool for observing human nature, it's also a serious crucible for creativity and business development.

Mitch Kapor of Lotus fame is a lead investor in Linden Labs' Second Life. Ad agencies such as Leo Burnett hold brainstorming meetings among their creative teams (actually, the avatars representing the teams) on their Second Life property. It is said that Reuters has an embedded reporter in Second Life and that the BBC regularly reports from SL. Addidas, Toyota and Warner Brothers are all building a presence in SL as is, dare I report, McWade Group. Artists and photographers are selling their Real Life wares in Second Life and musicians are breaking new music there in live concerts, too.
