Brian Lamb is something of an American hero. For many years he has helped us escape the detritus of commercial television. There is a notable exception to this well-deserved plaudit, however. The Washington Journal morning call-in show has become simply unwatchable and unlistenable. It's damaging, too.

The hosts, guests and subject matter generally work just fine. I am seeing the enemy, however, and it is we, the people. By actually encouraging viewers to call the show on Democratic, Republican and Independent lines, CSPAN is contributing to the ugly, uninformed partisan bickering that comprises too much of today's political discourse.

One Republican caller this morning said the answer to illegal immigration is to "string-up these illegals at the border" as a deterrent to others considering a border crossing. One shudders at the moral, legal and ethical violations behind this ugly suggestion. On the other hand, Democrats blame President Bush for absolutely everything, even though he is occasionally right on issues such as immigration. Mr, Lamb, you have left an indelible mark on high-quality conversation. Inviting the participation of the angriest, most partisan callers is a profound exception. The practice should stop.

p.s. Pat and I enjoyed yoga today at the marvelous Cranwell Resort here. Namaste.
