New York City
The New York Public Library matters. It is a place of substance and consequence. For me, it also brings back vivid memories of study and reflection years ago in its many glorious reading rooms.
We enjoyed a College Board reception there last night. The library was closed, so we had the place to ourselves complete with a stirring performance by the Fordham College-Alvin Ailey student dance troupe and a viewing of the Gutenberg Bible. Not bad for a Friday night!
Past NYPL Presidents such as Vartan Gregorian and the late Tim Healy remind us that there remains a life of letters in this country as powerful as the Edward Clark Potter lions that grace the front of the library's magnificent Beaux-Arts building.
