I had the opportunity to speak with word-of-mouth marketing guru Andy Sernowitz last month in San Diego. He is quite a character, but he is also a wonderful resource for getting people to talk about your product, service or cause. Sernovitz runs the GasPedal consulting firm and blogs at www.damniwish.com, as in "Damn, I wish I'd thought of that." Ultimately, Sernovitz tells us that people will talk about you for three reasons - to be helpful, to look smart, or to feel important. Indeed, we see these behaviors every day, whether the information being delivered is accurate or not.
