Rhinebeck, NY - Vocal improvisation is a useful metaphor for business and even life. I was at an improv camp with Bobby McFerrin and his colleagues this weekend. Of all the learning or reminders of lessons already learned, two essential points rose to the top.
First, listen! Too often, we’re planning what we’re going to say (or sing) at the expense of truly hearing others. “Understand the sonic landscape before you jump in,” McFerrin told us. Join the “conversation” if you have a contribution to make and, otherwise, be quiet.
Second, know your stuff. Improv is not just random nonsense. It builds on knowledge and practice. Ella and Coltrane improvised so well because they were experts in their craft. “You need to know the structure before you can fly,” said McFerrin associate Joey Blades. Just imagine the power of applying these two lessons to business meetings.
