Across the Great Divide

Maestro Daniel Barenboim started the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (performing in Boston today) as, in his words, "an orchestra against ignorance." Comprised of Israeli, Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian and Iranian youth, the Orchestra uses the language of music to break barriers made more rigid by the language of violence. Barenboim has just announced (with Frank Gehry and Brown University) a new conservatory based in Berlin that will also teach young people leadership, politics, humanities and required Arabic and Hebrew. So where can the rest of the world sign up for such an "awareness academy"? Twitter @jessicamcwade
