Bishop Tom Shaw of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Massachusetts is retiring. Agree with him or not, here is a leader with the courage of his convictions. In an age of so much hypocritical blah-blah coming from public figures, Tom Shaw always "walks the talk." Dr. King wrote to clergyman in his 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," words that were the floor and not the ceiling of what he was willing to do to fight injustice - whether in jail, at the point of a billy club, or worse. Bishop Tom Shaw gets that people can only be moved when the words and deeds of their leaders are in alignment, no matter the price.
