Plenty of media coverage in LA last week of Archbishop Jose Gomez's decision to relieve Cardinal Roger Mahony of all duties. This apparently severe albeit long-time-coming censure stems from Mahony's role in covering-up sexual abuse scandals for years as Gomez's predecessor. Except, it was all an illusion. The LA Diocese has been forced to admit that Mahony "remains a bishop in good standing with full rights to celebrate the Sacraments and to minister to the faithful without restrictions." So that's always the trick, right? Huff and puff to look tough. Then hope that nobody discovers how weak you really are.
