As Shia battle Sunni in the bloody Syrian civil war, broader alliances of convenience are being drawn. The Assad regime is supported by Russia, Iran, Hezbollah and, yes, Iraq. We liberated Iraq so that it could be free to work against our interests, though nobody should be surprised by the Tehran-Baghdad alliance. Sunni interests are being advanced by the rebels with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, western interests including Europe and the United States and, yes, Wahhabi fundamentalists and Al Qaeda extremists. You can’t make this stuff up.
