A Gallup survey finds that 70% of Americans are not fully engaged in their jobs or worse. This owes to an appalling lack of leadership in organizations. Sure, there’s plenty of celebrity, management discipline, and professional expertise in business today. Lots of hubris, too. What’s missing, however, are sufficient numbers of men and women able and willing to engage in the long-term, messy business of leading people. Without effective leadership, organizations fail to reach their full potential, atrophy, and even die. Why isn’t this obvious truth understood by boards of directors and others who place in positions of power people simply unqualified to articulate a galvanizing vision, build effective teams, open lines of communication, create conditions of trust, spur creativity, lead by example, overcommunicate, and develop their people personally and professionally?
