Libyan human
rights activist Salwa Bugaighis was assassinated Thursday in her Benghazi home.
Here was yet another brave, effective leader victimized in the same old way. As
is too often the case, Bugaighis was attacked by cowardly, standard-issue
vermin – young, uneducated militia men afraid of democracy, media, women,
education, music, art, change, individuality, modernity and just about
everything else.
The world suffers
incalculably every time these medieval marauders take down heroes like this in
whose shadow they could never stand. We like to think there will be a better,
more evolved condition for the human species in the future. After every one of
these episodes, however, that time and place seem more elusive than ever.
