Cast Them and Let Go

Peggy Noonan reminded us in today's Wall Street Journal what made the late Mike Nichols so effective. The Hollywood and Broadway director and comedy giant (with Elaine May), who died this week, once told Noonan that he didn't direct movies; he cast them. Isn't that key to successful leadership? Great leaders are unafraid to hire, develop, reward and promote the best possible talent. They excel at leading people who may be smarter and more creative than they are. They create the conditions for success (vision, strategy, resources, inclusion and communication) and then get out of the way and let the talent flourish.
