There is no doubt that Logan Smith is risking his life. Right now. At this very moment. There is simply no doubt that he is inundated with vicious hate mail and death threats from right-wing trolls and crackpots. Hate is entirely too easy to predict.
Smith certainly understood the late Heather Heyer's favorite quote - she was murdered by a Nazi stooge on Saturday in Charlottesville - long before he ever heard her name. "If you're not outraged," Heather would apparently tell friends, "you're not paying attention." It was the last thing she wrote on Facebook before heading to the counter-protest. Logan Smith has been channeling his outrage into real action for five years now.
Civilized people everywhere owe a debt of gratitude to Smith for building a Twitter network @YesYourRacist that has already identified quite a few of the Citronella brigade of foaming-at-the-mouth Nazis, Klansmen and white supremacists in Charlottesville as well as at least one of the criminals who attacked that young man with fists, sticks and poles in a parking garage.
The Klan once wore hoods. Yes, the hoods intimidated innocent people, for sure, but even dim-witted, church-going Klansmen back then understood the shame, immorality and criminality of their deeds. Now, they visibly walk among us, enfranchised by the temporary occupant of the Oval Office, until that day when they are forced to crawl back into their hole. If that day actually ever arrives, it'll be due to the bravery and determination of people like Logan Smith and Heather Heyer. We can only hope it happens sooner rather than later. After all, it's the promise that so many during World War II and the Civil Rights movements gave their lives to ensure.
