It Really Happened: Thule, Greenland

Midnight At The Northern Tip of Greenland

Several of us were flying with American, Canadian, British and Dutch P-3 squadrons for a week over the North Pole region. Working from our headquarters at the U.S. Air Force base in Thule, Greenland, we were producing print and broadcast pieces of NATO crews engaged in what was both a military and scientific exercise.

The Canadians established a racuous "officers club" in one of the weather-hardened quonset huts. Late one bright, sunny night the four-inch-thick double doors to our little oasis opened with a howling, snow-carrying wind to reveal five individuals in hooded snow parkas. The first arrival removed her hood and exclaimed, "Hi, were the band. Where should we set up?" Indeed, the powers-that-be had hired a wonderful rock band from LA to provide well-deserved entertainment for folks working 15-20 hours a day.
