We at the World Affairs Council were hosting First Lady Barbara Bush years ago upon publication of her Memoirs. My mother joined me at the head table for the breakfast event, whereupon she and Barbara took turns telling stories and bragging about their children. For every Jeb or George story, Doris had one about Pat and me. The Bushes and McWades could not be from more different socioeconomic origins, yet the joy of maternal pride united us that morning.
