Now That’s a Leader: Ashley Lawrence and Masks for the Hearing Impaired - Pandemic Edition #8

Remember those college students who refused to forgo Spring Break on Florida’s beaches due to Coronavirus? There are no words to describe their blind, selfish willingness to spread the disease to others and imperil public health.

Well, college senior Ashley Lawrence represents the opposite impulse.

The Eastern Kentucky University student majors in education for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. For her, the limitations of standard protective masks for deaf and hard-of-hearing folks were obvious. Opaque masks do not let people read lips.

Lawrence and her mom used materials they had at home to develop a prototype with a window that allows people to see the other person’s mouth. They’re now manufacturing considerable numbers of these needed devices.
