It was disappointing to hear Captain Jonathan Archer say in a Star Trek: Enterprise episode that his crew was comprised one-third of women. And only two women served in his wardroom. Really? That’s as far as women in service will have made it by mid-22nd Century? Let's hope not.
Along comes Navy Captain Amy Bauernschmidt to give us hope. She's the first woman to take command of a U.S. aircraft carrier. It’s a stunning albeit overdue development and yet another glass ceiling being shattered by women in the military.
In 2016, the Naval Academy graduate and combat helicopter pilot became the first female executive officer of a carrier, the Nimitz Class USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). It’s only fitting that she’ll take command of the Abraham Lincoln this summer.
