Washington, DC

We saw the Redskins defeat the hapless Detroit Lions today at FedEx Field here. The Redskins are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. However, not many fans realize the team played in Boston for its first four seasons. Boston was awarded an NFL franchise in 1932 and Washington resident (and longtime Redskins owner) George Preston Marshall purchased the team, dubbed them the Braves, and installed them at Braves Field. After one year there in partnership with Boston's fabled NL baseball franchise, the Braves moved to Fenway Park where they were given the unfortunate Redskins moniker. Marshall moved the team here for the 1937 season.

I had seen the Redskins play at RFK Stadium in the '90s and even saw the Washington Federals of the old USFL play there, too. At that Fed's game, I happened to have the lucky program with some unfortunate fellow's autograph in it that resulted in my winning a $200 gift certificate to Robinson's Jewelers. Given the USFL's chronic financial difficulties, I always felt that I played some small role in the league's ultimate demise.
