Cutting Comments

New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan told our lunch group yesterday that the "previous Tea Party" legislature in her state had cut public university budgets another 50% from an already dangerously low point. She's inherited these Draconian cuts and wondered out loud - and quite correctly - why anyone should be surprised that businesses can't find enough skilled employees.

Instead of attempting to reach an uneasy alliance with the wingnuts in their party, Republican business leaders should say, "No mas!" They cannot make intelligent, long-term investments in their enterprises without knowing they'll have access to a well-educated, high quality workforce. Otherwise, they will and should move to states smart enough to protect their competitiveness by investing wisely in their own future.
