Sepp Blatter will likely be re-elected today as FIFA president. This is a terrible shame, for Blatter has lorded over a
global kleptocracy for many years and it's finally catching-up
with him. The criminal cases now underway from U.S. legal authorities are only the start of a rolling
snowball of such gigantic proportions that even Blatter will not be
able to avoid it.
Just wait until the Swiss authorities complete their investigation of FIFA's awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar. The former is a nation indifferent to "the beautiful game" where players of color compete at their own risk and the latter is a nation that has never fielded a serious World Cup team. What they both share, of course, are bundles of money that President Putin and Emir Al Thani were only too happy to "share" with FIFA officials. Perhaps there is no better proof of Blatter's ultimate demise than being vigorously defended yesterday by a thief of breathtaking arrogance, Putin himself.
